Any excuse to write about Woodstock. The Woodstock Music & Art Fair or simply, Woodstock, as history has come to know it, is arguably the most important concert in American history. Ironically enough, the controversial, cultural benchmark was not held in the town of Woodstock at all. Max Yasgurs 622-acre dairy farm in the Catskills near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York was the location for the Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace Music. from August 15 to 18, 1969. Bethel is actually 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock, in adjoining Ulster County. Joe Cocker died today and I thought his performance (along with The Grease Band) on Sunday, August 17th, 1969, was one of the high water marks found in the groundbreaking 1970 documentary directed by Michael Wadleigh (Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker both served as editors). After the Cocker set (which ran from from 2:00 - 3:25 p.m.), a thunderstorm disrupted the events for several hours until Country Joe took the stage at 6:30 later that evening.
