Any tips for a child who finds the basic holding of the violin - TopicsExpress

Any tips for a child who finds the basic holding of the violin uncomfortable? He has been playing for over 2 years, but always found the chin rest next to his neck uncomfortable (has perhaps hypersensitivity to touch anyway as doesnt like shirts with buttons etc, says his skin hurts). We changed to a wittner chin rest which helped but now the area on the front ribs just below the collar bone where the sponge/shoulder rest meets him really hurts - even with many layers in between him and the sponge. This weekend he point blank refused to play because it hurt - this is very unusual as he is a boy who is very eager to please and will always do as his mum or a teacher asks of him. He also plays a very well and does not actually LOOK uncomfortable playing the violin, and holds it nicely on his shoulder... My thoughts and that of his mums are that he might actually be more suited to another instrument, but before we explore that possibility, can anyone give me any more ideas as to how to help him be comfortable? We are going to try a shoulder rest but I have an inkling this will not help much with the pain of the pressure on his ribs/collar bone... Any suggestions at all welcome!
