Anybody seen Noah? With Russell Crowe and various worthies? Well, I suppose purists might say it isnt a sci-fi film - but given its nature, Im not sure exactly what else you would call it. I missed (couldnt be bothered with) it when it came round the cinemas but hired the DVD at the weekend. How would you describe the Biblically inspired fantasy? Well it is something like a cross between a Mad Max film and a poor mans Tolkien fest. It has some rock creatures (the Watchers) which are dead-ringers for the Ents, and some warlike warrior types who could almost be Orcs - or certainly the bad guy humans Sauron employed. Im not remotely religious so I might as well state that I think the whole premise is complete tosh; but the film has a very strange flavour to it. I mean, did you know these middle eastern events seemingly took place in Iceland instead? It is a very dour, curious, and somewhat depressing film to be honest - and not one I would rush back to. Crowe is acceptable and Winstone and Hopkins pretty much as you might expect, but for something supposedly holy it lacks any feeling of righteous uplift or joyous satisfaction. It is a very odd film indeed ...
