Anyone actually read anymore? Two particular books brought me to a sailboat as a vessel for travel. I knew right off that travel was the goal and sail was the economic way to get there (completely wrong), this seems kinda backwards from many cruisers Iv met. Many own boats for years, and sail them. To me the idea of going nowhere slowly is kinda boring, but having somewhere to go makes it very enjoyable. Thats why I cringe at all the advice to start small, crew, get out as much as possible, yacht club events, ASA classes, ect.. If your looking to travel, most of that is pointless , sure some people who are clueless might benefit. But if your background was say, drag racing or building log splitters from scratch your probably just ready to go. It has little to do with being a sailor. Point the boat, set the autopilot, and start messin with the lines. Wind in your favor? Great, adjust and trim, now your sailing. Not in your favor, drop it and motor along in your sea kindly hull. Thats cruising, travel, call it liveaboard if you want, sailing is optional. So these two books got me hooked, both old tales for sure. They helped instill the romantic notions of sailing in me, now 10 years later its easy to see that romanticized view of sailing isnt what its about and was pure nostalgia for a bygone era. Great books nevertheless . Yankees Wander World c1949 Irving Johnson All in the Same Boat c1962 Earle Reynolds. Heres a quick pic of the books currently onboard, I try to switch it up every season. My library at home (storage area) is a large selection of classics from new to old, heavy on building and tech stuff. Its almost like some people discover this lifestyle and come right here. When they should really buy and read 100 books, twice. It would eliminated many of the silly questions and discussions if everyone put in ten years as a armchair sailor. If you zoom in I believe most of these mainly boat book titles are readable. No amount of Internet forums, chatrooms, facebook pages can ever replace reading and OWNING books for reference at a later time.
