Anyone else hear about the Nicaraguan Canal under construction that started last month? Neither did I until today while pursuing a curiosity about how the Panama Canal worked. Even weirder? The company that received the bid did so without an independent environmental assessment and apparently has no civil engineering experience. HKND has denied accusations that it is a front for the Chinese government. The Moscow Times has reported that Russia will take part in the building of the Nicaragua Canal, viewing the project in part as an opportunity to pursue strategic interests in the region. The contract with HKND was approved by President Ortega without any consultation with Nicaraguan society and ratified unanimously by his party FSLN. The opposition party PLI walked out in protest. Many believe the contract is an act of high treason because there are no benefits to Nicaragua, as HKND will keep all of the revenues once the canal is in operation for 50 years, is not obligated to pay market prices for the land, does not have to use Nicaraguan construction companies or hire Nicaraguan workers and is not obligated by Nicaraguan laws. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicaragua_Canal
