Anyone else see the irony inherent in the US, EU, Germany & our UKs stance on Crimeas referendum? The fact the latter have all given their support to a Regime in Kiev that forced its way into power and is riddled with Neo-Fascist extremists, yet back the said regimes denouncing of a Democratic Referendum in Crimea as illegal, this when such referendums have gone on for decades unopposed, the referendum in the then French-administered Saarland territory of Germany in 1935 being one of the oldest examples (which was a free vote, internationally monitored, and where the pro-French, pro-German & Independence camps made educated and reasoned cases for their cause, the pro-German result being accepted also by all). Whats going on now Reeks of Cold War posturing and double standards, of the kind ironically summed up by Chairman Mao of China thus: we shall support everything our rivals oppose, and oppose everything our rivals support Hardly the kind of action we should be supporting, where we deny a people their rightful say in their future, where the same right hath been given to so many others for decades, unless this is what is meant by the old jibe of western hypocrisy (in which case the Soviets may of had a point) rt/news/referendums-ukraine-west-relations-782/ juancole/2014/03/hypocrisy-washington-yugoslavia.html
