Anyone know how far back the history of bark cloth goes on our continent? Heard the Malawi clothing era began with the cloth called nyanda which originated from the tree bark according to this website africanhitz/malawian-fashion-roots/. Im trying to translate Mlombwa which it was made from into English...and so far I have the names African Teak, Wild Teak and Pterocarpus angolensis. Local names for the tree in other languages shared online but not sure if theyre correct but they include Bemba (mulombwa); English (sealing-wax tre,Rhodesian teak,Transval teak, blodwod, wild teak,African teak); Lozi (mukwa, mulombe); Lunda (mukla); Ndeble (umvagzi); Nyanj (mlombwa, mlombe); Shona (kiat, mubvamropa, mukwa); Swahil (mniga); Tongan (mukla); Trade name (kiat, mukwa, muniga); Tswan (mokwa, mortomadi) and Zulu (inGozina,inDlandlovu,mBilo,umVangazi) according to this link worldagroforestry.org/treedb/AFTPDFS/Pterocarpus_angolensis.pdf the Anyway this was also a bark of ancient Malawi priestesses and Im curious to know which other cultures also wore Nyanda...the bark cloth so that I can have FACTS...its an important secret which will be revealed whenever that day comes. The tree is also used in medicine as posted on this website....and I suspect it was used for writing on rocks and elsewhere. worldagroforestry.org/treedb/AFTPDFS/Pterocarpus_angolensis.pdf PS: Ive used various photos about bark cloth sourced online including from adireafricantextiles/africantextintro3.htm but about different issues and Im only sharing in this Facebook group to give an idea what Im talking about....peace.
