Anyone paying close attention to the lyrics of Heathen Apostles - TopicsExpress

Anyone paying close attention to the lyrics of Heathen Apostles songs will notice that we have an affinity for the balance between the Spiritual and the secular, and matters extending beyond the daily chaos of this mortal coil. That being said, wed like to take this Western Wednesday to focus on a legendary lady who managed to make Gospel rock and roll and cool, without losing the message she was trying to convey- Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Known as the original soul sister as well as the Godmother of Rock and Roll, Tharpe first caught the publics eye in 1938 while performing with Cab Calloway, and then released her hit This Train a year later. In 1945, she managed to be the first gospel artist to cross over into the Billboard R&B charts with her no. 2 hit Strange Things Happening Every Day. Though many traditionalist gospel listeners were shocked and offended by Sister Rosettas music, it was this very modern sound that appealed to the younger generations that had been turned-off by stuffy church music...a younger generation including the likes of Johnny Cash, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley (all influenced by this incredible woman.) We think youll enjoy this amazing live performance of Up Above My Head not only for its catchiness, but also for Tharpes killer guitar work- and, as always, happy #westernwednesday! youtube/watch?v=JeaBNAXfHfQ&sns=em
