Anyone read NME magazine September 6 issue? Festivals in crisis. Cant share it, but give a summary. Again a discussion about risky promotors vs shady ticket suppliers. ATP and Altfest are examples. If ticket suppliers loan money in advance to promoter, the full amount of ticket money should be on a separate account at the ticket supplier so the ticket supplier can pay customers back. WeGotTickets say the do so. Some ticket suppliers advance money, but they argue that because they do this they are just an intermediary acting on behalf of the promoter and that the promotor should be responsible paying back to customers instead. In industry there are some shadier practices like kickbacks on booking fees, given back to promotor. Should there be more legislation? No, there is enough many ticket suppliers argue. Consumer rights are protected in law. Competition between many ticket suppliers are good for the consumer. If people feel ripped of they go to another ticket supplier. More regulation and there will be fewer promotors etc. Instead - practise safe ticket buying: 1) Everyone here now know this by now... Find out if your bank do chargebacks. 2) Only buy from dependable agency. There is Society Of Tickets Agents and Retailers (STAR) who is self regulatory but with code of practise for their 45 members. If festival does not use any of them take extreme caution. star.org.uk/ 3) Find out if festival have cancelletion or abandonment insurance. Insurance reduces risk and attracts trustworthy ticket suppliers. 4) Read between lines and trust your gut. Very seldom a first year festival turn into huge success. After getting a reputation and having impeccable stories they will attract bands, sponsors, business partners and have quality that are better. Many festivals are cancelled rather obviously every year. Are the festival a member of Association of Independent festivals? aiforg/ Make checks like this.
