Anyone want to know my top movies? My former student, Caitlyn - TopicsExpress

Anyone want to know my top movies? My former student, Caitlyn Deviney, did, so she challenged me. As you can imagine this is a very important list to me so Ill also throw in the reasons why these are my top movies. Just as a disclaimer, though I have numbered them, I’d say that they are all my favorites and their order here is very loose. Here we go, top ten! 1. Grand Budapest Hotel This film has all that I am looking for in a film: stylism, a story that speaks deeply to the human condition, honor, unusual comedy, high stakes, and excellent characters to pull it all off. Wes Anderson has to be one of my favorite directors, for his ability to be unusual and relevant. 2. Unbreakable This is my all time favorite super hero story. The intensity of this film comes from the well crafted story. It hits home for me, a man who identifies with the man of steel. Love it. 3. The Incredibles Such a well crafted story that took such a unique look at the super-hero being a regular part of society. Loved the story and the visuals. The animation and the characters grabbed me. The music added a retro element, giving the feel of older super hero films. 4. Memento I love non linear stories and when a story is crafted so well and uses non-linear story telling so well, I can’t help but be in awe. I like Christopher Nolan before he was cool. 5. Life Aquatic Wes Anderson’s epic story of a very un-epic hero out for reckless vengeance. I love the attitude of this film and it’s stylism. I also love how you watch this character transform very painfully. 6. Ip Man I trained Traditional Wing Chun for 3 years. So not only do I love this for it’s story of a man protecting his family and people, but I love the martial arts. Probably one of the greatest martial arts films I have ever watched. 7. Mulan Rouge The only musical you will find on this list, but the way this film is done, I love every bit of even the music. This film tells one of the best romance stories I’ve ever seen and does it with such eye catching cinematography and stylism. 8. The Dark Knight Got to love Batman in his most gritty film against the best portrayal of his greatest foe! 9. Edward Scissor Hands I love Edward, he is such a great character against the comedic backdrop of the town he stumbles into. 10. Rocky Being of Philadelphia and being an athlete, my whole life has been colored by this iconic film. I love a good journey story and I love a character that feels as raw and as out there as Rocky. Never fails to make me want to wake up at 5am and drink eggs. 11. Secret Life of Walter Mitty I have quite a few films on this list about men reaching their mid-life crisis, but I think this is an incredible type of story to tell because it’s all about appreciating life right now and actually living. Walter Mitty is also me when I was 12, dazed and lost in my own head. I still am that way sometimes, but I’ve been very awake lately, enjoying the life i am presently living. 12. Inception I love puzzles and this film tells a compelling action packed story and is a puzzle at the same time. I love it. Even when it sounded cliche, this was one of my favorite movies, right away. 13. Brick A darker story, but one that has stuck with me for awhile. This film hit me right away with it’s score. The music of this film really gives it life and in my mind, though it is not overly complex, it is unforgettable. It is a film noir told in an unusual setting and I love that. 14. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind Long time favorite for Jim Carrey’s performance and for the beautiful cinematography. The way the story is told in this film with the camera is compelling and had me re-watching it many times just to enjoy those eye catching moments. 15. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead An unusual comedy that follows two side characters. I love this sideways look at a story, telling the whole thing from the perspective of the least important characters and who consequently suspect that they are least important. BONUS FILMS: These are films I couldn’t fit in my list, but mean a lot to me: American Beauty, Donnie Darko, X-Men Movies, Snatch, and a film that I enjoyed a lot and is a very new addition, Guardians of the Galaxy. I now challenge Alexander Wil Avellino, Sheila Nicole Avellino, Keith Avellino, Taylor Bledsoe, Addison da Silva, Aaron Christopher E. Smith and Ron Newcomb!
