Anyone who has a hosted server of any sort should be making preparations for the Xen Hyperapocalypse. At the very least, make sure to see if you have any email from your hosting provider, or check their web site, and be prepared for a reboot, or a server move, in the next 48 hours. An apparently extremely serious security issue in the Xen Hypervisor, the virtualization software that powers a large percentage of the worlds cloud servers, is requiring patching of a large percentage of Xen based VM servers on the planet. Yay! Details of the bug have been embargoed by Citrix until Nov 1st, giving the major Xen based hosting players like Amazon, Rackspace et al time to react, after which knowledge of it will be in the wild, and The Black Hats will go to work on it. As an indication of how serious, Amazon has been busy rebooting pretty much their entire EC2 cloud for the last week. Which is ... quite mind boggling. Nobody except Amazon knows how many physical servers make up EC2, but its probably somewhere in the region of a million.
