Anyone who is befuddled, angry, aghast, confused or just bewildered at my insistence that government is bad should at the VERY MINIMUM read this article which goes over some of the basic principles of freedom as applied to markets and government. It may surprise you to learn that the concept of the nation-state, which many Americans seem to assume came down with Moses and the 10 commandments from Mt. Sinai, is a relative latecomer in the political theory world. Besides the ethical considerations, I would submit that nation states ONLY work when there is relative homogeneity with regard to basic ideas like what is right and wrong? why are they right or wrong? what is a natural right? and other such topics. When a nation becomes large and unwieldy, it is simply impossible to obtain the common consensus necessary to keep everyone headed in the same direction. IMO, the USA is ungovernable in its current state. We have two broad groups of traditional moralists vs modernists who are both dead set on forcing submission by the other guys. I believe we are so fragile and unstable that the first big cultural/economic/military shock is going to splinter the USA. I dont fear this. 300 million countries sounds like a plan to me!
