Anyone who works with Alzheimers Patients know this is so true. Sometimes when you tell a family member that his or her loved one sang or smiled or said something, there is doubt on their faces. This happens more frequently than people realize once you have developed a rapport with the person who has the disease. It takes LOTS OF TIME AND PATIENCE but when it happens, you are so excited yourself to know that your months of trying to get through to them on some level finally worked. You have found that key that gives them peace of mind. Once you find it, it is invaluable. It is a way to draw their attention to you if they are upset/angry over something. When they turn their attention to you, (because of that little connection), the anger is usually gone then. I worked with Special Care people for most of my working life (probably 35 years out of 37) as well as during nursing school. Not once was I ever hit or attacked. This is why I loved working with these special people-for that little time of peace I can offer them at times when they need it most. Families are their number one peace/love (even tho they may not know your name or know that you are their child not their sibling), they recognize your face for whatever reason and know that you are someone that they love. Enjoy that. Dont keep saying I am your daughter. Whats my name? Eventually they will become frustrated with simple questions because they realize they cant remember and feel foolish. That is when anger happens. Enjoy the smile, hug, answer, hand holding. They do this because they love you...not the fact that you are their daughter/son/spouse but just pure honest love.
