Anyone who writes should watch this phenomenal scene. Despairing at the loss of his secretary, who was his high school teacher, oldest friend and confidante, President Jed Bartlet disrespects his god in the most powerful way he knows. He asks why a gunman almost killed one of his closest aides, Josh Lyman. Why an unarmed ship was sunk in a storm. He professes a sin, asks why what he has done to help the world has not been enough to stop the wrath of god. The Latin near the end is as follow: Am I to believe these things from a righteous god, a just god, a wise god? To hell with your punishments! I was your servant, your messenger on the earth; I did my duty. To hell with your punishments! And to hell with you! He finishes by stating that he has given up with his god and tells him, You get Hoynes - meaning he will not run for re-election and god can, instead, have his Vice President - a desperately flawed man - in charge of the free world.
