Anyone worried that Chancellor Joness plan for diversity and inclusion at the University of Mississippi poses a threat to tradition should recognize that the fear of losing Ole Misss traditions predates most of the so-called traditions themselves: 2003: Students begin chanting The South Will Rise Again during the playing of From Dixie with Love 1980: The band first plays From Dixie with Love 1979: Colonel Rebel makes first on-field appearance 1948: The band starts playing Dixie and fans begin to wave Confederate flags at sporting events 1937: Colonel Rebel image first appears 1936: University officially adopts the nickname Rebels 1927: Chancellor Alfred Hume makes public appeal for Mississippians to defend the Universitys traditions: “The University of Mississippi is rich in memories and memorials, in a noble history, and in worthy traditions. Were it robbed of these or separated from them, it would be a heavy loser and would become poor even if endowed with millions. A school without sacred memories and holy traditions can never be more than a school in the making.” Just goes to show that the Universitys only lasting tradition is fear of losing traditions itself.
