Apart from being national calamity, flood in Srinagar has a personal meaning …as our family – Anubhav’s parents & sister are stranded there though they are comfortable and safe at family friend Rashid Sahab’s home. The family home (Rajbagh: one of the worst affected areas) remains submerged in water upto 2nd floor. While thanking the well-wishers, let me mention the last 3 days of lack of communication have been terrifying and many people including some close family friends are yet to be rescued/ evacuated. We are grateful to various people/ organizations / different levels of administration for helping us directly and indirectly. However, one person we will never forget is that unknown Hanji (boatman) of Shikara who rescued our family (whether he responded on receiving our message or on his own can never be ascertained). That Hanji selflessly saved many people alone with local Kashmiris and youth even before the intervention of administration/army. Besides, my batch mate Sujit Kumar SP Kargil has provided us timely and accurate information and raised alarm and has since been constant help and support. Presently, he is in Srinagar in relief operations. No words of thanks can be sufficient but wish him best in operations he is undertaking and absolute safety and health. Can’t thank enough Dhirendra Mani Tripathi Neeraj Soi Narendra Singh Sir(2006 batch) Gayatri Verma Shashank Vuppala for their immediate response & concern. My FIL loves Kashmir and refused to leave during the insurgency as well and even now he doesn’t want to! The heaven on Earth that Kashmir is – is totally devastated and needs reconstruction. Nobody is untouched by this calamity- whatever be the religion/affluence levels/caste etc etc. Army and local volunteers are doing commendable job and now outside volunteers have started to reach there. As a gratitude to all those selfless hanjis, volunteers and relief workers we have decided to step out of comfort zone and trying to mobilize resources/relief material. All those who want to join / contribute are welcome!
