Apollonio di Giovanni and Marco del Buono,Trebizond Cassone, c. 1460, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (not part of the current exhibition). The Trebizond Cassone is one of the best-preserved painted wedding chests from this period. Trebizond, a Byzantine empire on the Black Sea, extended trading privileges to Florence in the late 1450s. The patron of the chest was probably a Florentine merchant who assumed his bride would recognize the setting, costumes, and political events represented.
