Apologies if the following post is blunt, but today Ive spent 6 hours next to a canal and had several heated conversations with people fishing. The picture below is of a swan that had swallowed a hook, become entangled in fishing line and had a multiple barb lodged under its wing, which is designed to push in further with the animals movement. The animal was in a lot of distress and the situation looked hopeless for several hours. Apparently this is the third incident on that one canal. Fishing is barbaric. Claims of but I dont fish near swans, are irrelevant. The victims of fishing are often animals such as swans or ducks because of how precarious hooks are. Studies are released all the time that demonstrate that fish feel the same pain and distress that the swan was feeling. Study: haaretz/life/science-medicine/.premium-1.600443 If you consider yourself to be an animal lover, extend that compassion to all living things, not just the companion animals you share your home with. For those interested, the swan was eventually rescued and is on its way to receive medical attention. The lady who helped us is hopeful for a full recovery and re-release.
