Apparent “Super Cell” event hits Groom Creek *** On Saturday, September 27, 2014, major storm cell moved through the Prescott Basin dropping a large amount of rain in a very short time along with very strong winds. During that storm, the Groom Creek area was stricken with an apparent ‘super cell’ weather event which caused a power outage to a small segment of Groom Creek community off Senator Highway. The affected area includes sections of Old Miner Rd, Yegan Road, Preddy Road, Preddy Loop and, Irish Girl Lane. The storm sheared off several power poles and trees and caused major damage to at least four (4) homes along with minor damage to 8-12 others. Approximately 30 homes, including those damaged, were without power. APS has been in the area replacing power poles and lines and hope to have power restored to the area by Thursday. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the damages on Sunday, September 28, 2014, by personnel from Yavapai County Emergency Management (YCEM) who learned about the event from a resident requesting assistance. As a measure of safety, the Yavapai County Jeep Posse and a Forest Patrol Supervisor were deployed and conducted a door to door canvas to ascertain any unreported injuries or residents in urgent need. The Jeep Posse made several contacts and discovered the majority of the homes were vacant. The residents who were still home had sufficient supplies and some were operating on backup generators. No medical issues were reported. On Monday, September 29, 2014, YCSO’s Rescue 1 was authorized to fly over the area to gather photographs and determine the size and scope of the damage. The information gathered from this overview will be shared with those agencies assisting residents. The Sheriff’s Office will be providing extra patrols throughout the area over the next several days with patrol deputies and our Volunteer’s in Protection (VIPs) to maintain neighborhood security on behalf of the residents. Non-residents are encouraged to stay out of the area to allow work crews unobstructed access to the damaged areas. The National Weather Service is accessing the weather event to classify its type and intensity.
