Apparently Fedex has a charitable donation/shipping request email address. I sent this off to them tonight: Hello, Im looking for some assistance shipping some books to a high school in the eastern townships of South Africa. A little background: Through mutual acquaintances I became aware over a year ago of an impoverished high school in eastern South Africa. When work can be found, wages in this part of the world are close to $10 - 15US/a day. While this could be considered a working wage here, books are priced the same as they are in the west, meaning paperback books can cost the equivalent of a full days wages, and high school textbooks the equivalent of a weeks wages or more. Needless to say, books are at an extreme premium at this school, and they do not have enough for their students. Last fall I was made aware through a friend of a defunct private high school in Toronto, Ontario that had abandoned the premises intact, and I, with the help of several friends, were able to salvage all the books from the school: modern highschool classroom sets of textbooks for science, drama, math, sociology, biology, english, art, etc., as well as the small school library of classic literature. These books were headed for a landfill site. Im looking for assistance getting these books to South Africa so this school can benefit from them. I have sorted and boxed them all, and they are on two shipping pallets totaling approximately 2200lbs. I would be grateful for full shipping assistance, but would also be happy with a discount shipping charge. In the latter case I would try to raise the funds necessary via crowd-source funding efforts. But the bottom line is Id like for these books to get to South Africa. Please let me know if you can help. kindest regards, Adam Smith
