Apparently after recording the vocals for this track Sinatra broke - TopicsExpress

Apparently after recording the vocals for this track Sinatra broke down into tears. Sure he didnt write his own music and a lot of the songs were pre-existing jazz standards but boy does Sinatra prove that music is just as much about the interpretation of the artist as it is about the writer. Youd think its a surprise to discover that this song brought him to tears but you can hear it there. The normally so assured voice of Ol Blue Eyes is replaced with a quiet, quivering vulnerability that makes this song and the whole of In The Wee Small Hours such a unique record. It comes off the back off his divorce from Nancy Barbato (after they initially separated on Valentines Day, 1950. How romantic) and in the middle of his unhappy marriage with Ava Gardner. In The Wee Small Hours is a 49 minute masterclass that soundtracks a heart breaking from an artist who is often cast aside as a novelty to be wheeled out for Christmas jollys or sing alongs at New Years. If you think Frank Sinatra is simply that one from the Rat Pack who wasnt Italian or Jewish then you owe it to yourself to listen to In The Wee Small Hours and reconsider. EDIT: Also I just read that apparently this was James Deans favourite song. Says it all really.
