Apparently the Universe felt I was due for another lesson in clarity, as in, “You think you’re in control of your world? Ha.” This is Ms. Maddison aka Maddie. Last Friday I found myself at the Martinez Animal Shelter on a mission to find and rescue an appropriate friend for our dear Pumpkin. Tom has since relieved me from any future missions of this nature. As cute and sweet and Maddie is, she also appears to suffer from Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. Anybody seen Lux, on My Cat From Hell? Yeah, that. Only Maddie’s episodes don’t involve attacking others, they are about attacking herself, which is more common with this disorder. To see this cute little one suffer an episode is gut wrenching and heartbreaking. In her first few days with us, there were a number of them. Now, as she settles in, they are fewer but we must be vigilant and distract her when we see the signs as we continue looking for answers. Sleepless nights, vet visits, and desperate research about FHS have filled this past week. Of course, as with all animals, Tom is her calm anchor and she adores him. Rox and Pumpkin are very patient with their new little sister who can and will turn into the Tasmanian Devil at a moments notice. But she slept through the night last night, and so did we.
