Apparently they dont understand why Church and State were separated to begin with. It had to do with the religious test. Before the separation of church and state, a Catholic couldnt hold public office in a Protestant country, and vice versa. It led to a bloody war that devastated Europe. Jonathan Swift parodied this war in Gullivers Travels, which he portrayed as a centuries long war to determine the correct way to crack an egg for breakfast. When the Founding fathers drafted up the Constitution, they had the luxury of sitting outside of Europe and deciding what things they liked and what they didnt like. It was agreed that a war between religious denominations, or even religions themselves, was a corrupting influence on Government. Any attempts to re-integrate Government and religion are a policy of fail. As Cenk Ugyur of The Young Turks points out, there are something like 8000 denominations of the Protestant faith alone. If you are going to try and restrict some of those religious denominations while excluding others, including Satanism, Wicca and the Flying Spaghetti Monster, good luck with that.
