Appeal for help - Please share We urgently need your help to re-home a very special horse who is facing imminent euthanisation. Aphia is a beautiful 8 year old mare seized as part of a large cruelty case in 2010 (bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11405014). 70 severely malnurished horses were taken but sadly several had already died, left lying in the filthy lot. Despite the sanctuarys best efforts, several horses including a young foal died within days of being rescued. Aphia was saved with her filly foal “Luna” and her friend “Hannah” whose foal didnt survive. Both the horses have since been trained by us and re-homed. We spent many hours back in 2011 at the sanctuary training Aphia to be approached, have a head-collar put on and to lead. Recently she came to our yard after reports from the trainer who backed her that she bolted and bucked. Close observation revealed that Aphia sustained a serious injury to both her stifles, probably by becoming trapped during her long period of neglect and fighting to free herself. This caused her pain when she was ridden so it has been decided that she is not suitable as a ridden horse. This is where we need your help. Very few people want larger horses as companions assuming that they need much more care and are more expensive to keep but this is not necessarily the case. Aphia is perfeclty healthy, a very good doer, will weather out in all conditions and has excellent feet that will need only occassional trimming. Her injury has no effect on her when shes not ridden and will not cause any further problems. She is also very friendly and easy to handle and was a wonderful mother so could be very useful as an “aunty” for weanlings and youngsters but she will go out with any horse. The sanctuary has made the imposible decision that if we cant find a companion home for her she will be euthanised due to the huge numbers of horses flooding the sanctuary. Were asking for anyone who could graze Aphia to contact us. A long term home would be wonderful but any offers will be considered. Alternatively if you havent got the space but want to help this lovely girl, please consider sponsoring her to be kept out in a herd. Any enquiries are welcome and wont be seen as a commitment to re-home her. Please contact your friends and family to try to find someone who can give Aphia a future. If we all work together, surely we can find someone who will appreciate and enjoy this lovely mare. She really deserves a home and a chance.
