Apple cheated and betrayed me. I purchased my first iMac to develop software in anticipation of the original iPhone1 release. After I bought a 2008 MacBook Pro 15” to develop software at work I felt certain I would never buy a Windows PC for the rest of my life. However that was before I purchased a 2011 MacBook Pro 15”. My i7 MacBook worked fine for a few months. Then it started having symptoms matching that of a 2011 MacBook Pro 15” GPU failure with video lines and system hangs requiring hard resets. I installed gfxcardstatus. he pattern was consistent, the problem only occurred a period of time after the discrete video card was switched on. I boosted fan speed yet it did not help. The video hangs started to occur more quickly now. Only a one or two minutes after switching to the the discrete the temperature would quickly rise then video corruption and system hang. Hard reboots would also hang but either waiting for cool down or repeated PRAM resets seemed to permit boot again. I forced gfxcardstatus to use only the integrated video and I limped by for a few more weeks. However there was always something that managed to demand use of the discrete video card. I started running everything in a VM and this seemed to get me by another week. Then one day it would no longer boot, the Apple logo displayed before a gray screen hang. I thought I was done until I tried single-user boot and learned how to remove the f-cking AMD GPU drivers. After removing the f-cking AMD drivers my machine is now usable for light desktop work - the kind of work that a $300 netbook can do more reliably. Finder and Safari are almost unusable because of constant and very annoying video repaint issues. However 32-bit Chrome does not have these issues. Sadly running OSX in a Parallels VM works better than the host OSX because it does not try to do GPU accelerated repaints of Finder and Safari. I expected *much* better from Apple. Not anymore.
