Apple is closing in on a deal to acquire Beats, maker of Beats headphones and owner of online music service Beats Music. This is a huge deal, much larger than Apple is typically comfortable with. The benefit to Apple is obviously the accessories market, but it also positions Apple to compete in the streaming music space with Spotify and Pandora. This is a huge, upcoming market that Apple would no doubt like to get a piece of. It should be interesting to see the outcome, or if they shut it down like they did with Lala. The other thing that makes this intriguing is that Apple is quickly losing ground as a market leader and investor sweetheart because of their lack of new innovations, cloud services and integration with the cloud. Beats and Beats Music could give them a much needed foothold.
