Applied Marine Biological Sampling and Data Collection The call is now open for the continuous professional development module (CPD) in Applied Marine Biological Sampling and Data Collection. This module developed by the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) and Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) runs from the 29th of September to the 24th of October 2014. It is directed at postgraduate students of marine science, marine industry personnel and those interested in developing a career in this area. The module features four days of ship time on the Celtic Voyager and the Celtic Mist off the south and west coasts of Ireland supported by three days of laboratory practicals and lectures at GMIT. Attendance is required from the 29th of September to the 5th of October with all other elements being accomplished through mentored distance learning. Topics addressed include quantitative sampling of fisheries and benthos, visual and acoustic methods for surveying and monitoring cetaceans and seabirds, biopsy sampling and preservation, and plankton ecology and oceanography.
