Appreciate Pamela Slim posting this perspective. Context matters. And it particularly matters in this case. Unless you live in the Inter-mountain West, it is hard to appreciate the richness of Native American Indian culture that is present there. If you have driven from Monument Valley to the Four Corners Monument, unless you came from the Utah side, you drove through Red Mesa. Last year, I visited the Laguna Pueblo on one of their festival days to see some of my New Mexico Presbyterian friends. To watch the dancing, and then lunch with some of the dancers in one of their homes, you get this divide that marginalizes any culture that doesnt fit the dominant culture. I was honored to be there. Read this context piece. I think it is an important counter-point to what the media typically fails to understand about all non-dominant cultures.
