Apr. 12th 1882 The Kansas City Evening Star reported that Zerelda Samuel was offered $10,000, plus a percentage of the receipts, for the body of her son Jesse James. The “preserving” company that made the bid is described as a “notorious manufacturer of ozone.” The firm intended to travel throughout the country exhibiting Jesse’s body which would be encased in a box and exposed to burning sulfur fumes and ozone. It was projected that $100,000 could be made within 2 years. The same company failed in its attempt to purchase the body of Charles J. Guiteau, who assassinated President James Garfield in 1881. The ozone treatment was said to “keep bodies wonderfully lifelike.”
