Apr. 4th 1872 St. Joseph Herald noted the habit of newspapers - TopicsExpress

Apr. 4th 1872 St. Joseph Herald noted the habit of newspapers misidentifying Jesse James in photos. A Denver paper used a photo twice. 1st naming the man in the photo as murderer of a James relative, the 2nd time claiming it was a photo of Jesse. The Kansas City Times did the same. 1st time the photo was “an innocent man hung by a mob in Kansas City”, 2nd time they claimed the hung man was Jesse. The Herald article noted the commonly used cuts look nothing like him. “The worst & most unpardonable breach of property” was using a picture of Gov. Thomas Crittenden, identifying him as Dr. Reuben Samuel!
