April 1, 2014: Reading Session. And also, since it is April Fools’ Day, we will have a best prank story competition (be prepared to tell us about the funniest prank. I decided to slightly modify the reading task, because I found a fantastic format of text+audiobook, which will make your reading fast and enjoyable. We will start reading a novel, and will be discussing the most exciting parts. The book suggested is Of Human Bondage (1915), a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, which is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and rates No. 66 on The Modern Library’s list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. W. Somerset Maugham is known for his easy-to-read style and witty psychological insights. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. He is one of the most loved authors of MSLU students too. I hope after we read a few chapters from this book, he will become one of your favorites too. So, here are the links: audio + text (please, do the first half of it, Chapters 1 to 3, they are short): youtube/watch?v=rGtq3vqJRAI text only (the whole novel): archive.org/stream/ofhumanbondageno00maugrich/ofhumanbondageno00maugrich_djvu.txt About the book: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Human_Bondage I also asked Evelyn if she would join us. She is not sure, maybe on another occasion. But we can have another reading session then too, right?
