April 10, 2014 Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent Gn 17:3-9, Ps 105, Jn 8:51-59 (usccb.org/bible/readings/041014.cfm) Abraham made a covenant with God about 2000 years before Christ. 1000 years later the psalmist remembered this covenant and God’s faithfulness. And another 1000 years later Jesus challenges the notion of the Jews that remembering Abraham will win them eternal life. Instead they must keep His word. Eternal life will come to those who will keep His word. So what word? Immediately the words Christ gives us are to glorify the Father. That is what He does, that is what we should do. Note a couple of things about His word... Twice in the Gospel reading Jesus says, “Amen, Amen”. Remember that this is His way of telling us to pay close attention to what comes next. Whatever it is it will be important. Also, note what gets Jesus in trouble with the Jews. The trouble is caused by two simple words. When Jesus says, “I AM”, He is saying to all those listening that He is God. I AM is the name of God. Words are important. Use them wisely. Use them kindly. Let them glorify God. Pray today that you use your words wisely. Pray that you are not harsh with others. Pray that the way you speak to others shows them how much God loves them. Pray for those whose words have hurt you.
