April 27. Its hard to shake the depression caused by remembering the fact that Incubus existed... So today lets keep it a little more lighthearted. On this day we have a couple of bland-o-rama crackers to kick things off with. In 1999 perennial YAWN favourites R.E.M. made their television debut. And talk about a perfect match... If ever there was a television counterpart for R.E.M it was Party of Five, The show that propelled Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love-Hewitt into oblivion and late night cosmetics infomercials respectively, it was the ultimate nauseating blend of feelgood vs angsty audiovisual compost. Speaking of audiovisuals... Today in 1987 U2 made the cover of Rolling Stone with the headline Rocks hottest ticket concurrently, an array of early response military satellites picked up a mysterious series of signals at a height of 1200 km. Initial interpretations that indicated a potential Soviet missile test were soon dismissed as it became clear that the actual cause was the massive shock wave of Bonos ego achieving escape velocity and breaching the earths atmosphere. Far from mediocre but well worth a mention, today marks the 7th anniversary of Keith Richards fall from a palm tree in Fiji. Conspiracy theorists have long argued that, due to a remarkably similar level of charisma, the tree was in fact Jack Johnson. This was disproven soon after the incident as the tree was rigorously tested and deemed to have the ability to play four chords. Also, in 1976, David Bowie was detained on a train at the Russian/Polish border and questioned by customs officers about his extensive collection of Nazi books and mementos. Thats neither mediocre nor a joke, but it is both creepy and interesting. Finally today we have a fascinating milestone. On this day in 1967 the worlds of excellence and mediocrity came crashing together with the release of The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. As a dyed in the wool Beatles fan it took me a very long time to come to terms with the fact that the Magical Mystery Tour film is an absolute stinker. It lives on as a reminder that even some of the greatest songwriters of all time (and arguably the greatest pop band of all time) were not automatically entitled to make great cinema. It was a case of Put the Beatles in a bus and the magic will just happen... If only theyd have thrown David and his suspect memorabilia on board for good measure. The double E.P. soundtrack however... Still an absolute ripper in my book.
