April is Autism Awareness month, and as usual, Im conflicted. Does Thomas have autism, or residual brain damage from his stroke? The question never ends. He was officially and controversially diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder at age 2 and autism at age 4. Now that hes 11, I see more Asperger Syndrome traits in him than anything else: hes nearly inept at making conversation unless its about one of his narrowed interests; he is scarily smart and has advanced language skills (especially given he didnt talk until after his third birthday); and he misses social queues and dynamics. However a mystery, he is my son and I love him to pieces. Hes come a very long way. He has over 300 Instagram followers to his page devoted to Godzilla, he is an actor in his schools puppet program, and hes an honor roll student without hardly opening a book. He loves dessert and PBJs. Hes quick to give hugs and despises noise. He is a fan of Family Guy and boy humor. Hes my dream come true!
