Aquaculture feed industry facing raw material scarcity even as demand rises VANCOUVER, Canada — Raw material availability is a challenge for the aquaculture feed industry as global demand grows while worldwide production does not and regional supplies fluctuate. “We have some storms coming our way due to the fact of lack of fish,” Humberto Speziani, director of Peruvian fishmeal producer Tecnologica de Alimentos, said Monday at a conference held here by the marine ingredients industry group IFFO, of which he is president. “We are going to adapt.” Amid a growing global population, increasing per capital seafood consumption and the maxing out of wild fisheries, future seafood production increases are expected to come from aquaculture, said Keith Were, senior fisheries and aquaculture management officer with Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans. More whole fish is going for human consumption at a time when fisheries managers are also taking a more precautionary approach to fish harvesting in a drive for sustainability, IFFO technical director Andrew Jackson told Undercurrent News. Animal feed demand is also rising, along with demand for human consumption of omega-3s found in fish products, IFFO director general Andrew Mallison told Undercurrent. Fishmeal and fish oil are key ingredients used to produce feed for the aquaculture and agriculture industries. Global fishmeal production has dropped to 4.675m metric tons in 2013 from 6.095m tons in 2004, according to IFFO and Oil World statistics. Meanwhile, the world’s feed aquaculture production has risen to 37.58m tons from 21.05m tons, according to IFFO and United Nation figures.
