Aquatic therapy and exercise is being used on an increasing basis and has been shown to be beneficial for children with SMA. The use of aquatic therapy in SMA may be related to the physical properties of water. The properties of water provide weight relief and postural support, facilitate antigravity movements allowing more freedom of movement, and provide an opportunity to perform activities that may be too difficult to accomplish on land. Aquatic exercises provide low-intensity strength training, walking and balance exercises, and aerobic training without the fear of fatigue or overwork.
