Aquino to Congress: Pass Bangsamoro Basic Law President Benigno Aquino III asked the 16th Congress on Monday to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law before the end of 2014, as he vowed to pursue the peace process between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In his fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered before hundreds of lawmakers and diplomats at the Batasan Pambansa plenary hall, Aquino urged members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to show to the MILF and the public that the government is committed to end the decades-old conflict in the country’s south. “Ipakita po natin sa kanilang hindi sila nagkamali sa pagpili sa direksyon ng kapayapaan… Sa mga naghahasik ng pagdududa: masasabi mo bang Pilipino kang may malasakit sa kapwa mo Pilipino?” the President said. Related articles He admitted that coming up with a consensus is not easy, but he thanked both the MILF and government peace panels for their listening to concerns of both parties. “Abot-kamay na rin po ang kapayapaan sa rehiyong matagal nang pinupunit ng hidwaan,” he said. The Framework Agreement was signed in October last year. Considered a blueprint of peace in Mindanao, the deal grants minority Muslims in southern Philippines broad autonomy in exchange for ending more than 40 years of violence that has killed tens of thousands of people and crippled development. If passed, the Bangsamoro will replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), which President Benigno Aquino III earlier considered as a “failed experiment.” sunstar.ph/breaking-news/2013/07/22/aquino-congress-pass-bangsamoro-basic-law-293802 Posted on Monday, July 22, 2013
