Archaeology and Photography Archaeology is a fascinating subject and the recording by photographic means of archaeological sites and structures, remains and objects found then conserved, can be a difficult, dangerous, methodical and laborious task. However, it can also be a very exciting form of photography, where barely recognisable objects can be positioned and lit to bring out hidden and obscure details. Archaeologists depend on photography to preserve history; as an archaeological excavation, when being dug, is “like reading a book backwards and ripping out each page”.
