Archivists from the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) - TopicsExpress

Archivists from the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) will be in the midst of a gathering in Crossville Friday of those interested in preserving the culture and history of the Cumberland Mountain region. Dr. Wayne Moore, Cathi Carmack, and Jessica Short will join representatives from the Tennessee State Parks, the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, the National Endowment of the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University, the Museum of Appalachia, and the Friends of the Cumberland Trail. TSLA preserves the collections of the Tennessee State Parks Folklife Project (TSPFP). Gathered from state parks across Tennessee from the Mississippi River to the eastern mountains, the TSPFP Collection is a major repository of Tennessee and Appalachian folk culture. Its focus is on musical recordings of traditional folk and country string music, and includes sacred gospel and shaped-note singing. The collection also records an impressive variety of cultural folk arts, including quilting, blacksmithing, gun making, musselling, cane chair making, storytelling, dulcimer making, burial customs and much more. About 20 percent of the audio recordings have been digitized and will be featured in an upcoming exhibit in the Tennessee Virtual Archive. TSPFP is just one of several rich folklife collections at TSLA. An afternoon reception will honor the organizations and institutions that help preserve Cumberland Mountain folklife, history and culture. The reception will be followed by a concert featuring music of the Cumberland Mountains to benefit the Cumberland Trail. For more information contact the Friends of Cumberland Trail by calling (423) 566-2229, or visit friendsofthecumberlandtrail.org.
