Arctic air mass settling in for the night now, and it will make - TopicsExpress

Arctic air mass settling in for the night now, and it will make for the coldest night since last winter. The day began with clouds and light snow. Gusty north winds pushed frigid air into the Ozarks, and generated wind chills around zero or below throughout the day. Temperatures remained stuck in the teens. The one bright spot was the sunshine with fairly sunny skies experienced throughout the afternoon. The clear skies are setting the stage for a dangerously cold night. A near record strong ridge of high pressure will glide through the area tonight. Winds will drop off, and under clear skies, temperatures will drop to near zero. Temperatures may actually slip a little below zero to the east and northeast of Springfield by morning. Winds will start picking back up by sunrise, leading to wind chills around -10 to as low as -15. Winds will remain gusty throughout the day on Thursday. This, coupled with increasing high cloudiness, will make Thursday afternoon feel almost every bit as cold as today. Temperatures will warm into the upper 20s, or over 10° warmer than today, but wind chills will remain in the single digits and teens. Another arctic front will arrive Friday morning. This will keep the area locked in the freezer through Saturday. By Sunday, temperatures will begin moderating. The moderating trend will be a result of the southern branch of the jet becoming more active. This will lead to another long, cloudy stretch that will last from Sunday through Wednesday. Disturbances will also generate light precipitation. Drizzle or light rain showers will be possible Sunday into Monday with temperatures hovering dangerously close to freezing. Sunday night could feature a risk of icy roadways, but temperatures look like they may stay just above freezing. Colder air will filter into the area on Tuesday with some light snow looking possible late Tuesday into Wednesday. The cold pattern still looks like it may relax by the following weekend.
