Are Hashimotos sufferers really just Hypochondriacs or Mentally - TopicsExpress

Are Hashimotos sufferers really just Hypochondriacs or Mentally Ill? I recently saw a post by a reader on the Hypothyroid Mom site say this in a very calloused response to Dr Kharrazians guest article about factors that prevent Hashimotos patients from getting better. Here is the link if you want to read this great article and then see the readers comments: hypothyroidmom/10-reasons-why-hashimotos-patients-dont-get-better/ This absolutely inflamed me as I have seen so many patients, including my wife, have this illness absolutely devastate them, and have doctors completely clueless at how to help. How does it make you feel to read this statement? How many doctors, family members, or friends have you had who have labeled you with the its all in your head diagnosis or tell you that you need to just get over it and man up or push yourself harder? This reader said that from talking with her endo and her parents who are both doctors she was convinced that Hashi patients have been duped, that they are taking attention away from real, serious auto immune disorders, and that they basically have Munchausens syndrome. Munchausens is a mental disorder where a patient will cause harm or illness to themselves or their child (by proxy) in order to gain attention or sympathy. This statement really shows how misunderstood this illness is, as I know practically every patient I have ever worked with just wanted to get back some sort of normalcy to their lives. What do you think? Normally I dont get emotional over posts, but this one really got to me. Actually, it made me a little sick that someone could be so callous to label hashi sufferers with a mental disorder. Your condition is real. It is misunderstood, even by doctors. I remember when my wife was with the top doctors at Harbor UCLA, and all they told was youre just weird...I dont GET you. Then one phone call to my old friend Dr Kharrazian, and in 5 minutes I had more information and direction and help than in months with the mainstream experts. Just because others dont understand what you are going through, it does not mean it isnt real. And just because they dont understand how to help you, does not mean there isnt an alternative solution. Please share your thoughts in the comments below. Have you experienced people telling you it was all in your head and label you a hypochondriac?
