Are We Going Backwards? By Mike Vick Is the question we must come to grips with, -One we must care to dare to ask Are we truthfully sharing and teaching our wonderful history and regal past? Do our children know of all of the achievements and sacrifices of their Forbearers? Are they aware their blood sweat and tears has fertilized America for years Consequently, they have many of the opportunities that they have. Are we going backwards? When our kids, see no need to pick up a book and read? Our youth are not seeing the vital importance of education in their lives While our ancestors was denied those privileges, and many lost their eyes For having, the nerve and audacity to do or even wish such a forbidden thing Are we going backwards? When back in the day, we hated to be called a -- “Nigger” We knew -- how they viewed us -- along with its derogatory meaning It mainly was said by others -- to be mean -- and demean -- people of color Yet, today that degrading term -- is being heard -- every -- other word Said by kids who mistakenly think -- it’s just another verb Hoping to look cool tough and slick It is a trick and far too many of our kids are falling for it Are we going backwards? -- As today, brothers do the work of the KKK Listen to this statistic, which should make us all sick and appalled A study by the Tuskegee Institute shows the Ku Klux Klan killed 3,466 Black people over 86 years, black men in America kill about the same Number of blacks -- every six months -- mostly other black men Are we going backwards? -- Taking each others lives- playing into the mans Hands by committing genocide Statistically it seems we have become our own worst enemies Therefore, -- everyday -- I pray to the Lord -- this awful trend -- may end To retrieve and leave a great legacy Teach our children of our true value and contributions We must remember that we are here by the grace of God In addition, we stand on the wings of our ancestors If we learn to love ourselves, at the same time respect and protect our Brothers -- again we shall surpass and shine brighter than all others
