Are YOU sovereign? Am I sovereign? Precisely WHO is sovereign?! SOVEREIGN: this word has been in the news lately. SOVEREIGN: weve all heard the word sovereign, its been in the news recently, re sovereign nations... A person who is sovereign has authority over all within & beneath. Could be a King, Queen, Statesman, politician, mobster, celebrity, business owner or supervisor, husband or wife, older sibling and younger sibling... Many stations in life could be described as sovereign. But the oldest antecedent of our word sovereign is the Latin word superanus. Pronounce it anyway you like, it spells the same in Latin and modern English. In my opinion, the etymology of the word sovereign explains quite well the all-too-frequent behavior of those who are over others. Superanus=Super-...-hole! Of course, one may be sovereign, exercising authority over those below one, without being a superanus, but nonetheless, while that possibility exists, this etymology is revealing and amusing..., at least, to me! ALSO, note that the the modern word sovereign and soprano share the same antecedent, superanus, in Spanish soberano. Makes me raise an eyebrow, and tip my hat, to the writers of the hit TV show, The Sopranos, for their cleverness. I never watched the show, but how many Americans _knew_ they were watching The SuperAnuses?! (Capital added, my own).
