Are You Following Christ? John 10:27 (27) “MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE, AND I KNOW THEM, AND THEY FOLLOW ME:” The phrase, “My sheep hear My Voice,” means that Christ is the Leader of the Church, and not men. Sadly, much if not most of the modern Church listens to the voice of man rather than that of Christ. While the Believer certainly should glean all that is possible from those whom God has truly called (Eph. 4:11–12), still, the Believer is to know the Word of God well enough, that he will know if what is taught is right or wrong. Multiple millions at present are in Hell, simply because they listened to other voices. The Believer must walk close enough to the Lord, that he not only hears His Voice, but as well knows it is from the Lord, and understands what is being said. The phrase, “And I know them,” refers, as would be obvious, to perfect and absolute knowledge, even on an individual basis. Even though God does address Himself corporately to the Church, His greater dealings, and by far, are with the individual. It is the same as a Shepherd knowing each sheep by name, and actually having a relationship with each individual sheep. Of course, a human Shepherd can take this only so far, while such is unlimited with the Lord. He knows us in the sense of wanting to have fellowship with us, and wanting to be totally and completely involved in every aspect of our lives. However, His involvement will never be forced, but always must be freely invited by the Believer. The phrase, “And they follow Me,” once again proclaims that which true sheep will do. In essence, the Lord is saying that the people of Israel could follow Him or their Religious Leaders. They could not follow both! That problem is no less pronounced presently. The Truth is, most of the modern Church follows Denominations, men, Doctrines, etc. Only a few truly follow Christ. Once again, this does not mean that it is improper to belong to Religious Denominations, etc. It does mean that we are to understand that these things are merely tools to help us in our walk with the Lord, or rather is what they are supposed to be. When they become more than that, which they are in many if not most cases, then the person is no longer following Christ, but rather man. ~JSM
