Are You Running Two weeks ago, we looked at the trial and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and last week, the salvation of Nineveh. In the case of Sodom and Gomorrah, the chosen of God fled from the city because there was no hope for cities nor was there any hope for the surrounding towns save one, Zaor, which Lot asked to be set aside for his own needs. They fled, running away from the evil, never to return yet the evil followed them as was evident in the actions of Lot’s wife as she turned to look upon the destruction and was lost. There was also the act of the daughters while they were in hiding in the mountains; remnants of the behaviours of old. Jonah did not want to do what God called him to do because it meant he had to go into a place where he was not comfortable, a place where he was not respected for his position and thus a dangerous place. He ran because he did not rely on the power of God but rather on his own understanding. In the end, God won out, Jonah ended up in Nineveh, the city was saved and everything was perfect, well almost perfect. Jonah was mad because these evil people did not get their just desserts. They had no claim to God and were not of the chosen yet God allowed them to live; He forgave them. This was, according to Jonah, wrong but didn’t Jonah defy God by denying God’s call to Nineveh? This week we look at the one Man who did not question God, did not run from God’s call on His life. This man ran into peril while all others turned away. We look at how Jesus willingly and without a fight came to earth to save all mankind not just for a time but for all eternity.
