Are any of you familiar with The Egg Plant that used to be in north Champaign? Im trying to figure out what the plant did. Research refers to it as an egg powdering plant as well as an egg crushing plant. Someone whose mom used to work there said it was owned by Standard Brands out of Indianapolis. I remember the building as a child -- I though it was The Eggplant. It was in a residential area and demolished in the urban renewal program in the late 1960s. The building was located on North Poplar Street (which doesnt exist any more) near Bradley Avenue. The area is now the site of Oakwood (?) Townhomes, previously Bradley Park Apartments/Townhomes. How/why would eggs be powdered or crushed? And why was this factory located in a residential neighborhood?
