Are commentators looking at the total income of mayors when they make their comparisons of FN vs public salaries? Mayors are not necessarily prohibited from earning extra income over and above their municipal salaries. Many do. Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz earns income from his business interests in addition to his municipal salary. FN Chiefs and Councillors are required to reveal all income. Do we know what the external income of Mayors, MLAs, MPs and Cabinet Ministers are in addition to their salaries as elected officials? Thats the proper comparison it seems to me. In addition cherry picking examples is misleading at best. We should be looking at averages of all income for all public officials to get a proper perspective. This is regardless of the question whether the funding provided to FNs is a legal obligation Canada must comply with. I will leave it for others to decide if the commentators are being nothing more than racist in their approach, but comments such as I have read are clearly misleading the public in a manner that will tend to bring about disrespect of and hatred toward Aboriginal leaders specifically, and Aboriginal people generally. They are opponents of reconciliation. All decent people should denounce such tactics.
