Are there slums in Australia? Places of extraordinary social disadvantage? Maybe not slums and certainly not in metropolitan areas but there are some places where social disadvantage surely morphs into social soical dysfunction. In 4 ind...igenous communities the unemployment rate exceeds 30%; in one (Yarrabah near Cairns) it exceeds 60%. Teen pregnancy rates in these places are close to 10 times the national average. Income levels are low; educaiton levels are low; and also low is the measure of volunteering which is a proxy for social cohesion. In comparison, it is the public housing estates on the edges of Sydney and Melbourne where social disadvantage is wosrt in the city. Claymore in Sydney, Dallas in Melbourne and Davoren Park in Adelaide. Social disdavntage by the meaure of access to jobs peaks in Brisbane on Russell Island. If there is social disadvantage in Australia it is in the isolated indigenous camps that few Australians ever actually see. theaustralian.au/business/opinion/challenge-of-social-disadvantage-can-be-seen-in-isolation/story-e6frg9jx-1226693024848
