Are these the actions of a caring and thoughtful woman or are they the actions of a calculating and ambitious politician who didn’t want to jeopardize support from outgoing Gov. Deval Patrick? Early last year a Maryland child welfare group sued the commonwealth for failure to properly care for children under their protection. Instead of standing up for the children, Coakley defended the state’s bad practices. She had the opportunity to be a leader and protector for the most vulnerable segment in our society. She chose poorly. Not until after two more children died under DCF’s care did Coakley finally join the calls for Commissioner Olga Roche’s resignation. Where was Martha when Justina Pelletier was held captive by the agency over differing diagnoses from competing hospitals? The pleas of her parents were ignored.
