Are they actually thinking of doing away with the interpreter service??? The comment below the video on the youtube site suggested this. That would be very wrong!!! It was a very good way of getting the difficulties of justice for anyone not fluent in a foreign language speaking court & there are Aussies in foreign prisons who have experienced this, notably the journalist in an Arabic gaol but this IS their country. This IS not a foreign country for Aboriginal people & many of them have to face this sort of difficulty in mainstream Australian courts & it would be a terrible thing to take even this minimal support away. As the video shows, it is an incredibly difficult thing to follow (the laughter did not demean this fact) if you are a defendant without the language skills in the court where you facing charges. A very good watch for any non-Aboriginal who wants to have insight into what it would feel like if the shoe was on the other foot!
